Spondylo-what??

My neck pain started up again on Sunday, after my body shifted a little bit while driving over a small bump in the road. The minute my body bent to one side while my neck listed in the opposite direction, I knew it was going to be ugly. I said "Oh no!" and Joel immediately reached over to touch my neck. It was just a twinge at first, but got worse until I could hardly turn my head to the left. I can't bend it at all to the left, but now I can actually turn it fairly well, which makes driving much easier. Still, I have a lot of stiffness, which means reversing out of a parking space is kind of a challenge.

When I told my doctor about it, she recommended coming in for an x-ray. The results showed that I have a mild spondyloarthropathy of the lower cervical spine with muscle spasm. What a mouthful! I'll be doing some more research to find out what exactly this means, but meanwhile I have a physical therapy appointment next Tuesday. And I can't wait!

  1. Hey Kiddo, your ol' Ma has had the same thing since being involved in a neck-thrashing car accident before you were born. Not only did it "wreck-my-neck", it totaled my '57 mint green and white 4 door Chevy. At this point in time I am not sure which I'd rather have back...my neck in good condition, or my Chevy in good condition. Oooh what a lie!! The car wins hands down. The neck is just one of those bumps in the road of life. M

  2. Hey there....I have a suggestion for parking. My company advises to pull through a parking space to the one on the other side if you can so that you don't have to back out when leaving. You may have to walk a little farther to the building you are going to but if it means you don't have to turn your neck to back out, it might be worth it.

  3. Mom-- ugh! Your neck, of course, is just *one* of the many things you have to deal with every day... /:)

Kathy-- thanks for the advice! I'm definitely going to do that whenever I can. My work only has parking spots that face a wall, so I'm out of luck there, but it's a better way to park at stores and such. Thanks! :)

  4. Mel....if you back into your car spot when you get to work, when you know there is no one behind you when you are pulling into the parking lot....that's easier too. They taught us to do that at my job too. They say it's easier to do that at the time you are parking than backing out when you leave. Use your mirror more too!
